5 Tips to Hiring the Right Bankruptcy Lawyer

Posted in on 24.03.11

Hiring a lawyer for any situation in life is not easy. Bankruptcy is no different. Below are 5 tips I would recommend to you from my experience that should help in hiring a bankruptcy attorney. I hope it is helpful information.

1.      Experience is key. I would hire a bankruptcy attorney that has at least 5 years of experience. This will mean that they have a full understanding of the state bankruptcy exemptions, as well as the courts and judges in their district.

2.      Credentials. The attorney should be in good standing with the state bar, and I would recommend choosing someone that is accredited by at least 1, if not both, of the following: American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Association (NACBA).

3.      Current case load. The amount of their current case load has huge implications as to how much attention to detail they will be able to give to your case.

4.      Law Firm. I would research the law firm that he or she works for, and make sure that there it is a well respected and accredited firm.

5.      Familiarity and convenience. A lawyer that is close to you and of whom you have any mutual friends or connections will be your best bet. It is a difficult time, so find someone that is close to you, knowledgeable and courteous to a fault.
